I have been Chair of the Governing Body of Catchgate Primary School for almost 15 years but have been on the Governing Body for over 25 years most of the time as an Authority elected representative.  I find that my experience in business, specialising in Human Resource Management, transfers very readily into the school.  I have always been proud to be associated with Catchgate Primary School - my son attended and it gave him a great start in his education.  We have a great school in Catchgate, which over the last 12 years has gone from strength to strength; it is a credit to the staff and the pupils.

I have been on the governing body since 2005 and was appointed by the Local Authority - I am one of the County Councillors for the area so that’s why I was appointed by the L.A .  I have had experience of being part of a Governing Body since the early 1990s and have good links with the Local Authority which I hope helps the school.

I think it is very important to be a Governor and, along with the staff team, we aim to help the school to continue to improve the education and pastoral care for the children in our community.  Lots of the things I do as a Councillor are a priority but I think being a Governor is one of the most important roles I have as it impacts on the future of all the children who attend our school.

I have been a community governor since 2013. Currently I am Priest in Charge of the parishes of St Thomas’, Harelaw and St Aidan’s, Annfield Plain and have been since January 2012. Prior to ordination in 2007 I worked as a children’s nurse. I strongly believe that people from all areas of life in the community should strive to work together for the benefit of the community. I love to welcome children into church as part of their learning as well as being able to share special services with them at Christmas. I enjoy leading assemblies in school and developing other school activities such as Messy Church in school. I love to travel, grow vegetables in the garden and I love my crazy Springer Spaniel, Bracken.

Being new to the school's Governing Body I am very much looking forward to attending courses in order to improve my effectiveness and contribute towards improving the already excellent education and experience the pupils receive at the school.  As well as being a parent of a little girl at school, I also work for a large IT company, where I have gained skills and experience that I can use in my role as Parent Governor - a role I feel very proud to have.

Hi, my name is Emma Bishop. I am a mother of 2 and my eldest attends Catchgate Primary School and is currently in Reception. I work within schools myself with a charity called Oases. I work heavily with different schools in the area including Catchgate to improve outdoor education and sustainability in schools. I wanted to be a governor to be more involved in my children’s education as this is an important factor in all our lives.

Ian Riley

  • A Community elected Governor who was co-opted and appointed by the Full Governing Body.
  • Term of office end date - January 2020

This is my first term being a school Governor.  I went to the original Catchgate School and I have two children currently at the school.  I think that being a Governor at the school and contributing my skills, knowledge and experiences will have a positive impact on our children's future.

Joann Sharkey

Hello, my name is Joann Sharkey, I have 5 children who have all come to Catchgate Primary School. Currently I have 3 children still attending Catchgate Primary with the older 2 at North Durham Academy. Lots of the children will know me as I work here as a Lunchtime Supervisor. I applied to be a Governor as I wanted to know more about the school and how it is managed. At the weekend I enjoy walking my dog, Rex, with my children.

Joanne E. Shaw

  • Staff Governor and Head Teacher.
  • Term of office end date - 31st August 2019
  • A member of the following committees - Children and School, Community, Finance and Personnel.
  • Voting rights on all committees named above
  • Register of interests - Wife of Steve Shaw, Teaching Assistant

I have worked at Catchgate Primary School since September 2007 and have been a Governor for many years both at Catchgate and at a previous school in East Durham.  I have been a teacher for 20 years and have worked in 3 other schools across the county.  I love my job and adore working with the children and pupils as well as the staff and parents.  It is my role to prepare reports and information to present to Governors at meetings as well as keeping them informed of events and activities when they call into school to carry out their duties.  The Governors at our school are very pro-active - they know what is expected and required of them and they hold myself and senior leaders very accountable for the progress of each and every child.

Neil Bell

  • A Staff Governor who was elected by staff in school.
  • Deputy Head Teacher and Year 5 teacher
  • Term of office end date - 13th August 2020
  • A member of the following committees - Children and School, Community and Finance.
  • Voting rights on all committees named above
  • Register of interests - None declared

I have been a staff governor since 2012 when I joined the school as Deputy Head.  During this time I have led on Mathematics, ICT/Computing and Assessment. Prior to my governor role here at Catchgate, I held a post of staff governor for 8 years in my previous school. I enjoy my role in school as I get to see the progress made not just for my class but for the whole school. I see it as my job to ensure that staff are challenging our children enough to meet their potential and that we have enough information about the children to enable us as educators to do that. I enjoy the challenge that being a staff governor can bring as we give updates on progress and are questioned about the information we present.

Julie McDonald

  • A Staff Governor who was elected by staff in school.
  • Key Stage 1 Leader and Year 2 teacher
  • Term of office end date - 31st August 2019
  • A member of the following committee -  Finance
  • Voting rights on the committee named above
  • Register of interests - None declared

I have worked at Catchgate Primary School for over 25 years and I am still passionate about my job and keen for all the children in my care, to meet their potential in all areas of school life. I have taught in all year groups across the school and have been co-ordinator for RE, History, Geography, Maths and English throughout the years. I am now Curriculum Lead for the foundation subjects and Literacy co-ordinator. I am Staff Governor and as such represent the views of all members of our increasing staff.

Angela Cooke

  • An Associate Governor.
  • Early Years Leader and Reception teacher
  • Term of office end date - 12th May 2018
  • Register of interests - None declared

I have been a governor since taking up my post at Catchgate Primary in February 2014. I became a Governor in order to familiarise myself with all aspects of school life, governance and curriculum as a result of becoming a member of the senior leadership team. Prior to accepting the role of Early Years Lead at Catchgate I have worked for seven years as a Primary School Teacher within Durham County.

Bill McDowall

  • An Associate Governor
  • Extended Services Co-ordinator
  • Term of office end date - 2nd June 2017
  • A member of the following committees - Children and School and Personnel
  • Voting rights on all committees named above
  • Register of interests - Partner Eileen audits School Fund

I am the SEN Governor on the Governing Body. I became a Governor so that I could attain a greater understanding and knowledge of the whole school structure and because I would like to help the next generation on their educational path.  My background before joining Catchgate was firstly in horticulture, then entertainment and hospitality management. I bring with me a wealth of skills in man management, personnel, marketing, finance, public speaking and a good sense of humour!  I also enjoy meeting and talking to people.

Resignations from the Governing Body in the last 12 months:

  • Mr Richard Robson's term of office came to an end in May 2016.
  • Mrs Donna Shaw resigned in June 2016.
  • Mrs Lisa Lakey resigned in July 2016.

Mrs Donna Shaw and Mrs Lisa Lakey both resigned their Governor posts before the summer holidays in July 2016.  Both ladies have a lot going on in their lives and working within schools themselves found that their work load was too much to enable them to continue being a Governor.  We thank them both for their time on the Governing Body.

New Parent Governors

  • Mrs Emma Bishop, who has a young daughter in school, put herself forward to become a Parent Governor and was nominated and appointed as of October 2016.
  • Following a parent ballot in March 2017, Mrs Katherine Hardy was appointed as a parent Governor.  She has 2 boys within the school.  Mrs Hardy will commence her role in May.
  • Mr Mark Eltringham was a nominee on the March 2017 parent ballot and has recently been appointed to the Governing Body as an Associate member.

Record of Governor Attendance 2016-17

Governors have excellent attendance at meetings and we have never cancelled a meeting because it was not “quorate” (the number of governors needed to ensure the legal decisions can be made).

Schools are now required to display a record of Governor attendance at meetings for each school academic year.
